The proverbial “once-banned fruit” that is black currant is where it’s at. In case you weren’t aware, this berry was banned in the U.S. for half a century, and it finds new life in this candle.

The rich sweetness of currant preserves provides depth to an oak and sandalwood base. A touch of amber and black pepper bring some warmth and spice to the party.

So dropkick that vivid, purple grape-jam-looking candle you’ve got sitting on your mantel into the nearest rubbish bin. You’re looking for a real candle, not a sack lunch PB&J ingredient.

Top: black currant, tart berry skin

Middle: amber, cracked black pepper

Base: oakwood, sandalwood
