Kousaido’s Waboku series explores Japanese wood fragrances through slim, beautifully engineered incense packs that unfold from a single piece of paper.

Each package includes 25 incense sticks in a compact format that feels equal parts practical and quietly clever. Hinoki offers a soft, calming Japanese cypress scent with warm sandalwood underneath. Kusunoki, or Japanese camphor tree, is cooler, greener, and more invigorating.

Made in Japan, each stick burns for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

Hinoki
Soft, clean, and grounding. Hinoki has the familiar freshness of Japanese cypress, balanced with a warm sandalwood base. It feels calm without going sleepy, like fresh wood, filtered light, and a sunlit clearing deep in the forest. A scent that settles the room and brings a sense of balance.

Kusunoki
Cooler, greener, and more clarifying. Kusunoki, or Japanese camphor tree, has a crisp camphor-wood character with subtle warmth underneath. Bright and rooted, it feels as though the fragrance rises directly from the forest floor.

The Waboku packaging looks like a narrow box, but is actually formed from a single folded piece of paper. It opens in layers, almost like a tiny piece of packaging origami, revealing the incense inside without extra plastic or unnecessary bulk.

It is a small detail, but a good one. The package feels practical, efficient, and very Japanese in its attention to structure, proportion, and the simple pleasure of opening something well-designed.
